U.S. Senator Mike Rounds recently hosted a ceremony in Washington, D.C. to mark the granting of a congressional charter to the National American Indian Veterans (NAIV). Speaking at the event, Rounds highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “I am proud to say that 20 years later, your hard work has paid off and the charter is a reality.”

Senator Ben Ray Luján, who co-sponsored the legislation with Rounds, also delivered keynote remarks during the ceremony. Veterans’ Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough was another prominent figure present at the event. The ceremony featured a Presentation of Colors and Ceremony Drum Group by various veteran organizations, including the Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society, Kiowa Women Warriors, and Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Veterans Organization.

During the ceremony, NAIV National Commander Don Loudner, a Korean War Era veteran and member of the Hunkpati Sioux Tribe, was presented with the NAIV Charter documents. Loudner's contribution and dedication to the organization were acknowledged in this special moment.

Other notable figures in attendance included Senators John Thune and Amy Klobuchar, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army Jaime Pinkham, and Army Major General Patrick Gaydon. The event was also graced by representatives from various tribal associations, such as the Coalition of Large Tribes (C.O.L.T) and the Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Association.

The signing of the NAIV Congressional Charter marks a significant milestone for Native American veterans, symbolizing recognition and support from the government. The event served as a testament to the efforts and advocacy of individuals and groups dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifices of Native American veterans.
